Shutterbugs, please me help with lighting equipment purchase.!?

I have a Canon S3 IS, 6 mega pixels. I’m thinking about getting a ‘continous’ lighting system ,ie…2 lite stands, w/umbrellas, 1 boom arm, and misc parts, (it comes in a kit.) I don’t think i need a ‘flash’ lighting system, is this true.? I do not own a SLR camera and I’m just getting started with portraits as a hobby. am i on the right path?

You’re talking about a continous lighting system, sometimes called “hot lamps.”

This lighting system, as you describe it above will work, with some cautions:

1) You must custom white balance to get the right colors or shoot RAW and adjust the white balance in post processing. See you camera manual.

2) Shutter speeds above 1/60 of a second may give unusual results due to AC issues with the lamps (current switching 60 times a second in AC).

3) Hot lamps change their color output over time, so that a custom WB at the start of a session may need to be different in the middle and then at the end.

4) Hot lamps do not freeze motion like strobes/monolights.

To answer your question directly: yes, you’re on the right path. The only concern I can see is that if you get really serious, you’ll end up with studio monolights so you should be prepared for that possibility that you’ll end up spending more money down the road.
