Camera Iso Explained

In camera specs. what is ISO?
when you buy a digital camera in the market you will this 3 letters plus some numbers (most are in 4 digits such as ISO 1000, ISO 1250 etc) do any camera savvy guys explain to me what the purpose of this specs. in my pictures?!
ISO is the sensitivity to light that the sensor has. The higher the number the greater the sensitivity, e.g., ISO 100 is very insensitive and is good for bright light, ISO 800 is very sensitive and is good for shooting in dim light such as a church with no flash.
