What is the best digital SLR camera at an affordable price?

I am interested in buying an SLR, but not sure that is the best buy? What brand is the best … Nikon, Canon, Sony? I used it all to take pictures of my kids so I'm looking for one that is a reasonable price. Thanks in advance for your answers.
